The INTERNET GUIDE TO THE CORALS AND HYDROCORALS OF BRAZIL is our first attempt at reaching a large public interested in Brazil's reefs. Our fauna´s high endemism, low diversity, and the occurence of archaic forms make it unique to the world.

In the INTERNET GUIDE TO THE CORALS AND HYDROCORALS OF BRAZIL we include data on species and genera in the light of recent research done at Rocas Atoll and the northern coast of Bahia and the intensification of research in the Abrolhos region. We also substitute most of the images of the original edition with photographs taken by Carlos Secchin, add a map of ocurrence for each species and provide an English version.

Why the INTERNET?

In Brazil there are few that are truly familiar with coral reefs. Many do not know that coral reefs are live structures and that the best traditional fishing areas of the eastern and northeastern coast are found around reefs. Despite the important socioeconomic role they play they ignored as the rich, complex and fragile ecosystems they are.

On the INTERNET a great number of people have access to information about Brazil's corals and, in turn, may educate others. Brasil is a country of great inequalities and we are conscientious of the fact that other actions are needed to truly popularize Brazilian coral reefs. This is only the first step.

Why bilingual?

The degradation of reefs observed around the world is also evident in Brazil. Overfishing, dynamite fishing, pollution, carbonate extraction, unmonitored tourism, etc., are considered to be the causes of reduction in coral cover and diversity, increase in coastal erosion, as well as, we must remember, the reduction of available protein upon which coastal populations depend. And our reefs are little known to the world... and 1997 is the International Year of the Reef... and English is the instrumental language of cyberspace...

The interactivity and agility that characterize the medium in which this guide is available present us with the challenge and opportunity to keep the guide constantly up to date. In this effort we ask for the collaboration of all in sending us criticisms and information that may contribute to this work.

In this form, here are the corals and hydrocorals of Brazil.
