3. Agaricia agaracites

Agaricia agaricites is found in colonies of various sizes and forms. The colonies are encrusted and have straight, prominent edges. Corallite sizes vary between 1.0 and 1.6 mm. Calices have an average of 16 septa. The columella is deep and hardly visible. This photophilic reef species is sensitive to environmental variations, such as luminosity and energy of the water. The form found in clear waters with moderate energy levels is relatively large (up to 15 cm in diameter). It has
more prominent edges than the form found in agitated waters with strong light penetration, which is globular and relatively small (a few centimeters in diameter). The forms found in environments with medium light and energy, present morphologic characteristics that vary between the two referred to. The color of the live colonies is usually greenish brown and sometimes light brown.

This coral inhabits reefs from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, and the Rocas Atoll, to the Abrolhos region, at depths between 0 and 20 m and at temperature around 27ºC.
