7. Porites astreoides

Porites astreoides initially has encrusted colonies that grow to form solid masses with diameters of up to 50 cm. It has a roughly spherical form and small round protuberances. The calices measure approximately 1.5 mm in diameter and possess a central columella. They have a yellowish brown color. The presence of cirrepeds is common in this species. Laborel (1969a) describes two distinct populations: population A, common to Fernando de Noronha, on the coast of Pernambuco and in Abrolhos, forms massive colonies and is found in clear and agitated waters, and, population B, forms colonies that are less dense, platy, dark and is found in protected places.

This species seems to resist moderate water turbidity. According to Hetzel and Castro (1994) it occurs from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Rocas Atoll, to the state of Espirito Santo.
